1. Your legs sink and you kick harder to compensate

The single most expensive fault in the water. When your hips and legs drop, your body stops being a torpedo and becomes a plow, and your frontal area β€” the surface pushing water out of the way β€” can more than double.

The instinct is to kick harder to lift them. That works, briefly, and it is the most metabolically expensive fix available. Legs are large muscles that consume oxygen at a high rate and contribute a small share of freestyle propulsion. Kicking hard to hold up sinking hips is spending your entire aerobic budget on posture.

The actual fix is upstream: press your chest slightly down into the water and hold your head in line with your spine. Your body pivots around your center of mass, so pressing the front down raises the back. 2. You lift your head to breathe instead of rotating
